She "hooks" her reader by saying that her kids talked about art in Spanish and how they made movies. Any teacher could do that. You don't have to be in a year round school to do awesome experiments...
The hook the author uses is that she tells what her children are doing in school and when you read "My second-grade daughter went to school the other day and made potions in her Harry Potter class. My son's class of fourth- and fifth-graders wrote movie scripts, filmed them and learned how to edit the on a computer." you think wow this school seems different and maybe in a good way too.
she hooks them by saying that her kid had just got home and said that she that her daughter said that she had just had a great time in Harry Potter Class
she hooks the reader by starting out saying that "My second-grade daughter went to school the other day and made potions in her Harry Potter class. My son's class of fourth- and fifth-graders wrote movie scripts, filmed them and learned how to edit them on the computer." and i think that when i saw harry potter and movie scripts that made me interested in reading the rest because they are very popular things and the interest me and a lot of other people as well.
